3 Steps for Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan Size
Know the dimensions of your space
Not only can a ceiling fan add a decorative touch to your room, but it can also help you save money on heating and cooling costs: in the warmer months by circulating cooling air, and in the cooler months by pushing warm air back down into the room.
3 Steps for Choosing Your Ceiling Fan Size
1. Determine the square footage of your room.
For example, a room that is 12 feet long x 10 feet wide = 120 sq. ft.
2. Measure your ceiling height.
Have a tall or cathedral ceiling? Many ceiling fans work with 8- or 9-foot ceilings. If your ceiling is higher, you’ll need a downrod to extend the fan down from the ceiling. The rule of thumb is that fans should have a minimum of 7 feet of clearance between the bottom of the fan blades and the floor. This ensures your air is circulated efficiently, and reduces chances of collisions with the fan.
3. Determine the size fan you need.
The chart below can be a great quick guide to determining your fan size based on Steps 1 and 2.
